Cuddebackville — One firefighter was taken to the hospital after battling a fire at Brim Recyclers Inc. yesterday morning.

The fire started just before 11 a.m. and quickly spread to nearly 20 cars on the property along Route 211, according to Cuddebackville 2nd Assistant Fire Chief Chris Parliman. Parliman would not release the name of the firefighter or the cause of his injury, citing health privacy laws.

By 11:30 a.m., yellow-gray smoke and haze hung over the Route 209 corridor as far north as Wurtsboro, and smoke could be seen and smelled as far west as Exit 111 on Route 17 near Rock Hill.

The fire was out by 2 p.m.

Brim recycles primarily metal, such as aluminum and auto bodies.

A combination of tires, cars, gasoline and other hazardous materials made the fire difficult to fight, fire officials said.

Intense heat and the location of the fire added to the challenges, Parliman said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, fire officials said.
