Woodbury - A three-car, chain reaction wreck at the Thruway toll plaza here yesterday sent two women to the hospital and one of the women, who suffered serious injuries, was airlifted by helicopter.
State police said while a woman was waiting in line at the toll plaza around noon, her SUV was slammed from behind by a Volvo, throwing her vehicle forward into a second SUV, which was in the toll plaza lane while the driver was paying the toll.
The driver of the Honda Pilot at the front of the pileup was not seriously injured. The driver of the Volvo was taken to the Cornwall campus of St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. A state trooper on the scene said the woman driving the Volvo, whose name was not released, told authorities her power steering failed and she lost control of her car.
The driver of the SUV in the middle of the pileup was flown to Westchester Medical Center. Her injuries did not appear life-threatening at the scene, state police said.
The crash, which occurred in the southbound lanes, closed at least one of the toll booths until about 1:30 p.m. Northbound traffic, heavy by that time with Memorial Day weekend travelers, was not affected.
