Yard sales galore

Yard sales galore

Everywhere you look in Gardiner today, you'll find a yard sale. Today's the last day of Gardiner's townwide yard sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., probably the best day to look for bags of bargains. For participating yards, check out the town's Web site or call 255-8252.

Nomadic arrival

The Traveling Band of Gypsy Nomads is a two-person outfit that blends gypsy, Celtic, medieval and rock styles into a rich and flavorsome brew.

They've opened for some better-known bands, such as New York's Voltaire, but their relative anonymity won't last for long. They're that good. And you can catch them in the intimate space that is New Paltz's Esoterica today at 6 p.m. For details, call 255-5777.

Going green

It's a bit off the beaten path, but anyone with an interest in anything Irish won't want to miss the East Durham's annual Irish Festival at the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural and Sports Centre.

The aim of the festival has always been to celebrate Irish and Celtic music the best way possible: by performing it.

To that end, the Dublin City Ramblers, direct from Ireland, will be there, along with The Young Dubliners from Los Angeles; Seven Nations from Orlando, Fla., and bands from all over the country. Tickets are $12 before 2 p.m. and $15 after that. Kids under age 12 are free. Visit east-durham.org for details.

Get dowsered

Ever wondered about dowsing, the ancient way of finding water (and lots of other stuff) with a forked stick? Here's your chance to try your hand at it when the American Society of Dowsers meets at noon at the Walker Valley Schoolhouse on Route 52 today.

Treasure hunter Howard Whittaker will demonstrate electronic dowsing with some of the eqipment he uses and bring samples of the things he's unearthed over the years. There's a $5 admission fee. Call 744-3960 for further information.
