Ellenville - An abandoned casino building on the Tamarack Lodge property was struck by lightning and leveled Friday night.
The wood-and-concrete building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene at about 11:30 p.m., according to Ellenville fire Chief Fred DuPont. Several trees in the area of the building were flattened as well, he said.
Firefighters spent three hours making sure all the building’s hot spots were out, he said. Four fire companies responded to the call for mutual aid.
DuPont said he was unable to judge the building’s contents and that the building went up quickly because of its age. “It was pretty dry, but we were soaking wet,” he said.
