Sister Nancy Burke, (Sister John Margaret, OP) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died Saturday, July 28, 2007 in Vassar Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She was the daughter of John and Margaret Burke of County Galway, Ireland.

She was born July 2, 1927 in County Galway, Ireland. Sister entered the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, December 8, 1950, made First Profession, June 17, 1952 and Final Profession, August 22, 1955.

She received a BA degree in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y.

Her ministries included elementary school teaching in St. Lawrence, Laurel Springs, St. Boniface and Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, all in New Jersey; St. Mary, Newburgh, Annunciation, Crestwood, N.Y.; San Juan, Puerto Rico and Assumption, Fairfield, Conn.

Sister was principal of the following schools, Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson; St. Mary, Newburgh, and Annunciation, Crestwood.

She is survived by three brothers: John of New City, n.Y., Gerard, Joseph and one sister, Christina Burke of County Galway, Ireland. She was predeceased by a brother, Alpha Burke and two sisters, Bernadette Healy and Eileen Ryan, all of County Galway, Ireland.

Visitation will be held in the Dominican Sisters of Hope Chapel, 320 Powell Ave., Newburgh, N.Y., on Monday, July 30, 2007 at 2 p.m. with a Wake service at 6 p.m.

Viewing will also be held Tuesday morning, July 31, at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. William Scafidi of Newburgh. Burial will follow in the Dominican Sisters of Hope Cemetery in Newburgh, N.Y.
