New Windsor- Residents of the Quassaick Bridge Fire District go to the polls tonight to decide whether to approve a $4.9 million bond issue to build a new firehouse.
The new firehouse would be built next to the current one at the corner of Walsh Road and Cedar Avenue.
The fire district acquired two adjacent homes to accommodate the new building. The site of the current firehouse will become the new parking lot.
Fire officials said their firehouse does not meet a number of state and federal building codes, nor does it comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Also, the department needs more space for training exercises and vehicle maintenance.
A feasibility study found it would cost too much to try to upgrade the firehouse to meet all those requirements.
It is estimated the bond issue will cost $123.65 per year, or about $10.30 a month, for the average homeowner.
Any registered voter who lives in the district is eligible to vote. Voting will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the firehouse.
