Saugerties — A sheriff’s cruiser collided with a fleeing ATV near Teetsel Road Tuesday morning after a brief pursuit.
Police said Michael Hughes, 18, was observed shortly after 10 a.m. riding his ATV on Buffalo Road. Hughes fled when the deputy attempted to stop him and drove his ATV onto Harry Wells Road, crossing Route 32 without stopping and continuing to Old Route 32. Hughes slowed abruptly and crossed into the path of the pursuing cruiser at a trailhead near Teetsel Road. Hughes and his ATV were pinned to the front bumper of the police car.
Hughes was not injured.
Deputies impounded the ATV and cited Hughes for failure to comply, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, reckless operation of an ATV, failure to stop at a stop sign, operating an ATV on a public highway and having an unregistered and uninsured ATV. Hughes was released, pending court action.
