ALBANY ó Sen. Chuck Schumer has co-sponsored a bill that would address elder abuse.
The Elder Justice Act would provide tools and funding to state and community officials to prevent and detect elder abuse, Schumer said yesterday in a telephone news conference. The bill would require coordination of data collection by a new Elder Justice Coordinating Council and the Department of Justice.
According to data released by Schumerís office yesterday, the Hudson Valley leads upstate New York in elder abuse cases with 2,316 reported in 2007.
The Elder Justice Act would emphasize safeguards against physical and financial abuse of seniors.
Priorities of the bill include jump-starting intervention research and developing community strategies to make elders safer.
