PORT JERVIS — The proposed $58.7 million budget for the Port Jervis City School District carries a 4 percent tax increase, say district officials who presented the 2008-09 spending plan to school board and the public last night.
Assistant Superintendent Lorelei Case says there has been an 8 percent increase in the administrative budget to cover the cost of new accounting software. Still, the proposed budget includes money for new playground equipment, new textbooks and a special fund for each grade level to buy equipment like microscopes or reading stations.
The budget includes a grant of $2.2 million for new programs under the state’s Contract for Excellence. Port Jervis officials said they would like to hire new teachers with the funding. State funding figures are preliminary and expected to be finalized by mid-April, officials say.
Residents with questions about the budget are invited to e-mail the district at portbudget@pjschools.org.
