Smoking is hot topic
State Sen. William J. Larkin Jr. spoke to fifth-grade students at the Newburgh School District's Fostertown ETC Magnet School recently about the dangers of smoking. Following a lesson on the dangers of smoking by Town of Newburgh DARE Officer Sally Black, the students wrote letters to the senator asking, "With all the dangers connected with smoking, why is it still legal?" Larkin spent more than a half-hour answering questions on the topic. DARE (Drug Awareness and Resistance Education) is a school program sponsored by police departments in local communities to educate children on the dangers of using drugs.
