Sr. Evelyn Shehdan, OP (Annie Helen Ruth) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Newburgh, died February 25, 2011 at The Wartburg in Mount Vernon, NY. She was 92 years of age. The daughter of the late Beshara and Susan Barnhill Shehdan, she was born May 28, 1918 in Henderson, NC.
Sister Evelyn entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh on October 4, 1936, made her First Profession June 28, 1938, and Final Profession August 21, 1944. Sister Evelyn earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Villanova and a Master's degree in Guidance from Seton Hall University.
Sister Evelyn spent most of her religious life in elementary education. In New York State, she taught at Saint Francis School in Newburgh (1940-41), Saint Boniface School in Manhattan (1941-46), Saint Mary School in Poughkeepsie (1948-50), Christ the King School in Yonkers (1961-66), and Our Lady of Fatima School in Scarsdale (1977-86). She was principal at Sacred Heart School in Newburgh, 1966-69. In North Carolina, Sister taught at Saint Elizabeth School in Elizabeth City (1946-48 and 1950-61). In New Jersey, Sister was principal at Saint Mary School in Gloucester (1969-77) and taught at Saint Mary School in New Monmouth (1986-97). In 1997, she moved to Newburgh, where she has served as sacristan. In 2009 she relocated to The Wartburg in Mount Vernon, NY.
Sister Evelyn is survived by two brothers and four sisters: Phillip Shehdan and his wife, Bertie, Fred Shehdan and his wife, Betty, Theresa and her husband, John T. Roberts, Vicky Varner Smithfield, Hazel Babcock, all of North Carolina, and Evelyn Smith of Orlando, FL, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Shehdan and Linwood Shehdan, and one sister, Martha Davis.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 28, at 3 p.m. at the Meadowview at The Wartburg in Mount Vernon, NY (Laughlin Room). Visitation: Tuesday, March 1 at 10 a.m., followed by a Prayer Service at 10:30 a.m. in The Dominican Sisters' Chapel, Newburgh. Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, March 1, at 11 a.m. in the Dominican Sisters' Chapel. Burial will follow in the Dominican Sisters' Cemetery, Newburgh.
