Artists open studios tour

NEWBURGH - More than 95 artists are participating in the eighth annual free Newburgh Open Studios event, Sept. 29 and 30, noon-6 p.m. each day. The multi-location event includes a self-guided tour of artists' studios whose styles and disciplines are as diverse as are the individual artists. From performance art to traditional oil painting, sculpture to avant-garde video, these studios open a window on the creative mind.

Most of the studios are walkable and free maps can be picked up at Newburgh Art Supply, 5 Grand Street, home base for co-owners Gerardo Castro and Michael Gabor, who organized this event.

Besides the studios, area artists will be exhibiting work at GlenLily Grounds, organized by Lacey Fekishazy, in a project including 29 artists who have placed site-specific art and sculpture on the 11-acre estate at 532 Grand Ave., Balmville.

See work by participating artists and get more info at or call Castro or Gabor at 561-5552.

Sculpture bears good will

WARWICK - That colorful bear on Railroad Green is not meant to scare anyone. On the contrary, the sculpture, painted by the Village of Warwick’s Artist in Residence Elliot J. Belokostolsky, aims to please.

Meet Cosmo, a creature who has been set in this very public spot to bring "good vibes and positivity to the community," say Village personnel. "Cosmo represents the freedom of self-expression and devours fear of creativity," according to the artist.

Visitors are encouraged to interact with and take photos of Cosmo. He'll be on display through November. After that, he's up for sale, with a percentage of the proceeds gong to Hope for Depression Research Foundation.
