TOWN OF WALLKILL - A Town of Wallkill man has been charged with assaulting a sheriff's deputy following a Tuesday night car stop, police said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Erik Duggan, 35, was a passenger in a car deputies stopped about 9 a.m. Tuesday on East Main Street in the Town of Wallkill. Police said deputies noticed a smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and a search turned up a small bag of pot and a small bag of cocaine.

Police said Duggan grabbed the bags from the deputy and ran. Police caught him in a nearby parking lot, where, they say, he fought them and tried to avoid arrest. One of the deputies suffered bruises and scrapes and was treated at Orange Regional Medical Center, police said. State police and Wallkill police aided in the arrest.

Duggan was charged with second-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence, felonies; misdemeanor drug possession, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration; and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

He was arraigned in Crawford Town Court and sent to Orange County Jail on $15,000 bail or $45,000 bond, pending a Wallkill Town Court date.

The driver of the car was issued a ticket citing a plate lamp out.
