THOMPSON – A Monticello man was charged in the theft of a car from the parking lot of the Burger King on Route 42 in the Town of Thompson Sunday afternoon.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office said a 64-year-old Monticello man reported he left his 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage running while he went into the Burger King. When he came out, his car was gone. Police agencies in the surrounding area were notified of the theft.

Burger King video surveillance footage showed a man later identified by the sheriff’s office as Andre Burdine Jr., 31, of Monticello, getting into the car and driving away.

Around 7:25 p.m. Sunday, Monticello police Officer Tyrus Walker spotted the stolen Mitsubishi at the Heritage Inn on Broadway. When he approached the car, Burdine got out and tried to run away. Walker chased Burdine and took him into custody.

Burdine was turned over to sheriff’s deputies and charged with grand larceny, a felony. He was arraigned before Thompson Town Justice Sharon Jankiewicz and sent to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $40,000 bail, pending further court action.
