HACKETTSTOWN -- A fire alarm that brought authorities to Van Winkle Hall at Centenary University during the early morning hours last week was caused by a student smoking marijuana in his dorm room, police said.

Jared Andino, 21, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., was charged with being under the influence.

Around 1:38 a.m., the Hackettstown Police and Fire departments responded to to the campus' co-educational residence hall due to an activated fire alarm, police said.

The alarm forced the evacuation of all students in the hall.

When officers arrived on scene, they detected the odor of burned marijuana coming from one of the dorm rooms -- Andino's room, police said -- and determined that the marijuana smoke caused the alarm to activate, police said.

There was no reported fire and students were allowed back inside the building.

Andino was arrested and released pending a court appearance.

According to the Centenary University student handbook, a drug offense, including being under the influence, upon conviction "can result in expulsion or suspension" from the school.
