NEW WINDSOR – U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney will present a Congressional Gold Medal to a Newburgh woman who served in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II.
Irma Turner Estis will be recognized on Saturday during a ceremony at the New York Air Show, which takes place this weekend at Stewart International Airport.
The Civil Air Patrol recruited high school students to assist the military and help protect the coasts and airspace, including monitoring for German U-boats and enemy aircraft. Estis, 89, joined when she was 14 and served from 1943 to 1945.
Maloney co-sponsored legislation that created the Congressional Gold Medal to honor members of CAP.
