LIBERTY – Sullivan County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested an 8-year-old boy on Thursday, and charged him with two counts each of fifth-degree arson and fourth-degree criminal mischief in association with vandalism at Swan Lake Park in the Town of Liberty, officials said.

Police didn't release the name of the suspect because he is a minor.

The charges are related to the damage that police found at the park, while responding to a call at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Police said they found old photographs torn off walls, a knocked-over billboard, a marked-up visitors log, and fire damage to a gazebo.

An investigation by members of the sheriff's youth division led to the suspect's arrest.

According to police, the suspect admitted to causing the damage and told deputies that when the first fire went out, he returned to the location and started a second fire.

After being charged, the youth was released to the custody of a parent, and he was ordered to appear in the county's family court on Tuesday.

Sheriff's deputies were assisted by the Village of Liberty Police Department.
