MONROE-WOODBURY — Pop Warner will celebrate 52 years in 2019. It will also be Coach Bill Scully’s 50th season with this chapter of Pop Warner.
This non-profit organization became available to Monroe-Woodbury residents 52 years ago through the efforts of Jim McNelis, where from 1967 through the 1984 season, the league participated in an intramural type of season. The Town of Monroe Cheer and Football teams joined the Rockland County Youth League in 1985 winning its first Rockland County Championship in 1990. In 1995, Monroe-Woodbury Pop Warner's President, Bill Scully, created the Empire State Classic Cheer and Football Championship, which crowns State Champions on various levels. It was during that inaugural year that Monroe-Woodbury’s Pee Wee Division won Empire's very first Empire State Championship Playoffs.
Over the years, our Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee divisions have won 6 Empire Championships, 11 Rockland County Championships and have advanced to Regional playoffs over 7 times, with the 2003 Pee Wees winning the Regional Championship. This season, both the Mitey-Mite and Junior Pee Wee teams won the 2018 Rockland County Championship and the Mitey-Mite team reached the finals of the first Mitey-Mite Empire State Classic.
The Junior Pee Wee team advanced to the semi final game in the Eastern Region, which includes various teams from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C. In addition, Cheer has won various county titles, regional titles and has placed at the Nationals in Disneyworld and is heading back to Disneyworld this year.
While some former players go on to play at the collegiate level, most important is many play at the Varsity level and the majority of the players who have earned the Michael J. Finnegan Scholarship are former Pop Warner players. The program encompasses more than just developing football players – friends that become family, a sense of community, and life lessons that are carried beyond the field are all part of the Monroe-Woodbury Pop Warner experience.
