MILTON - A Newburgh man's car veered off the road and into a ditch after he fell asleep while driving, which launched the vehicle into an Ulster County deli Saturday morning, police said.

Jamel Donaldson, 25, was driving south on Route 9W when he nodded off and his car struck Kirky's Deli in Milton shortly after 7:30 a.m., according to a Facebook post by the Town of Marlborough Police Department.   Robert Kirk, owner of the deli, said the crash destroyed a third of the building. "It was a one-second crash," he said.     Donaldson was taken to a hospital for evaluation and a customer suffered minor injuries from the debris, police said. A parked car was also hit. Police are investigating the crash.     Kirk, who has run the deli for 32 years, said he was standing about 6 to 8 feet away from where the car landed, along with about five customers and one of his employees.
“A lot of good people from around came and helped," Kirk said. "I’m very fortunate to have a lot of faithful and local customers and friends. Whatever they could do to help, people came from all over.”
The deli is closed until the building can be repaired, and Kirk is unsure how long that will take.   He said that after Donaldson went to the hospital, he later came back to the deli and apologized.

“I thought that was pretty good of him," Kirk said. "Who would do that? Not a lot of people would do that.”
