Through his writing and his fundraising efforts, Port Jervis native and longtime Times Herald-Record columnist Chris Farlekas (1929-2015) raised more than $4.5 million dollars throughout the tri-state area for charitable causes, including the arts, hunger, domestic violence, veterans, homelessness and others. An iconic mentor to thousands of students, his work in the community earned him numerous “Man of the Year” Awards and an honorary PhD from Mount Saint Mary College.
The Chris Farlekas Legacy Fund is participating in Hudson Valley Gives, a regional fundraiser ending on May 15. Online donations via the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan’s HV Gives program will enable the fund to distribute grants to various charitable projects and provide scholarships to high school graduates in memory of Farlekas. Donations of any amount are welcome. If 2,500 past readers and friends of Farlekas donate $10, the fund will be in a financial position to create its first scholarship award.
The HV Gives program welcomes donations May 8-15. To donate, visit hvgives.org and type in "Chris Farlekas Legacy Fund" in the search box. For more information, call the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan at 769-9393.
