The driver of an SUV was killed Monday morning in Sullivan County when the vehicle hit an oncoming bus, police said.
Prior to the crash, the bus had dropped off passengers in Liberty and only the driver was in it at the time of the collision, according to a news release from Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty.
While police described it as a school bus, Chaboty said it was not being used to transport public school children.
The bus driver suffered a minor shoulder injury and was taken by ambulance to Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, the news release says.
The SUV was traveling west about 7:45 a.m. on Route 52 by the Liberty and Fallsburg town line when it crossed the double-yellow line and struck the Rolling V Bus Corporation's bus heading in the opposite direction to South Fallsburg, police said.
The driver of the SUV was killed on impact and pronounced dead at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Albee Bachman.
Authorities are withholding the identity of the driver pending notification of next of kin.
Traffic was detoured for more than two hours Monday morning while the crash was cleaned up and police investigated.
The Loch Sheldrake Fire Department, Liberty Fire Police, New York State Department of Transportation and state troopers assisted at the scene.
