KIRYAS JOEL - A 26-year-old Kiryas Joel man was killed Sunday night when the car he was driving careened down an embankment on Karlsberg Road and overturned in a stormwater detention pond, state troopers said on Monday.

According to the state police account, Jacob Farkas was unresponsive when rescuers pulled him from the 2018 Hyundai Sonata, which was upside down and partially submerged. He was pronounced dead at Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill.

The accident was reported to police at about 7:20 p.m. Farkas had no passengers in his car, and no other vehicles were involved. The state police were assisted by Kiryas Joel firefighters and emergency medical technicians, and by the Monroe Fire Department's SCUBA team.
