CITY OF NEWBURGH – A 28-year-old man was run over and killed by a tractor trailer early Wednesday morning, city police said.

According to police, it happened just after officers asked the man to leave the Mobil gas station at the corner of Route 9W and Broadway at the request of a clerk.

Police said when officers responded to the gas station at about 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, the clerk accused Kyrell Saunders, 28, no address available, of stealing a candy bar and asked that he be removed from the premises.

After the officers told Saunders the clerk wished him to leave the area, Saunders walked east and put his hands out in a stopping motion to slow a northbound 18-wheeler on Route 9W.

Police said Saunders then crossed in front of the tractor trailer and ran along the passenger side as it continued driving north. Saunders then tried to jump onto the side of the 18-wheeler but officers saw him fall under the trailer portion of the vehicle.

Officers ran to where Saunders had fallen and tried to help him but he appeared to already have died from his injuries. A representative of the Orange County Medical Examiner’s office responded to the scene and pronounced Saunders dead.
