RAMAPO - Ramapo High School was evacuated today when a student used pepper spray and sickened people in the building, officials said.

Shortly before 8:45 a.m. a student used a small pepper-spray product that was on a key chain, and another student and a security guard nearby became ill, said Scott Salotto, a spokesman for the East Ramapo Central School District.

Ramapo police said about seven people in the school were exposed to "an unknown chemical." Salotto said the product was not used during any type of confrontation.

The student who became ill was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern to be treated for difficulty breathing and watery eyes, Salotto said. The security guard was being treated by emergency workers.

Monsey firefighters and the Spring Hill Community Ambulance Corps were also on the scene. Students are staying warm on school buses while the situation is investigated, police said.
