MONTICELLO – Sullivan County Court Judge Michael McGuire has been named the next county attorney.
The county legislature made the appointment at a special meeting Thursday.
McGuire will replace Cheryl McCausland, who will step down April 19.
The vote was 6-1, with one lawmaker abstaining and one absent.
Legislator Ira Steingart, who represents district eight, cast the lone dissenting vote, but admitted it was difficult to do so, since his son and McGuire’s are friends. But Steingart said he thought Deputy County Attorney Tom Cawley should get the job.
“We have four candidates and all have the ability to do the job,” Steingart said. “But Tom has been here for decades and done a wonderful job. I think it’s important to promote from within the county government when somebody has the skill set to do the job.”
Seventh district Legislator Joseph Perrella abstained, because he had appeared twice before McGuire.
