No one was reported injured Thursday afternoon when a metal canopy at a Kerhonkson gas station collapsed, police said.
The canopy, sheltering all of the pumps at the Valero station on the corner of Rts. 209 and 44/55 in the Kerhonkson section of the town of Wawarsing, started leaning around 12:25 p.m., according to Det. Lt. Abram Markiewicz of the Ulster County Sheriff's Office.
Police, the fire department, and the Wawarsing building inspector responded immediately to the scene and turned off the power to the gas pumps and the utilities serving the station, and cordoned off the area around it, Markiewicz said. By 1:45 p.m., the canopy had fully collapsed onto the ground, he added.
There was a wind advisory during the day, but the cause of the collapse has not yet been determined.
There was a report of a gas leak or gas odor, but no contamination was found, police said. The store and gas station will remain closed until the building inspector deems it safe to reopen, Markiewicz said.
