TOWN OF WALLKILL - Police say a New Jersey man in a muscle car was clocked at 145 mph on Route 17 in the Town of Wallkill.
New York State Police said a trooper parked in a U-turn spotted the 2009 Dodge Challenger westbound on Route 17 near Exit 122 about 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 28. As the Dodge passed the trooper, police said, the driver accelerated and began passing another car in a reckless manner.
The trooper verified the Dodge’s speed at 145 mph, police said, more than twice the posted speed limit of 65 mph.
The Dodge eventually exited the highway, and police ultimately stopped the car on Route 17K westbound.
Police identified the driver as Jeremy Vanleuven, 23, of Wanaque, N.J. Police charged him with second-degree reckless endangerment and reckless driving, misdemeanors; and issued a speeding ticket.
Vanleuven was released with an appearance ticket for March 13 in Wallkill Town Court.
