GOSHEN - A second defendant in the 2018 gunpoint robbery of a 67-year-old man in Port Jervis has been sentenced to prison time.
On Thursday in Orange County Court, Justin White, 29, of Port Jervis, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for first-degree robbery, and a consecutive six years in prison for second-degree rape, after subjecting an underage girl to sexual conduct.
White and Tranelle Drake, 30, of Port Jervis, accosted the victim about 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 3, 2018, in a parking lot on Jersey Avenue in Port Jervis. Officials have said the assailants threatened the man with the gun, struck him across the face and took his wallet, cell phone and keys, then locked him in the trunk of his car.
The man used the emergency trunk release and escaped before the assailants could drive away.
Drake and White were arrested in Walden after a chase in the stolen car.
Drake pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery and was sentenced Feb. 6 to 13 years in prison.
While the case was pending, police learned that White had subjected a girl younger than 15 to sexual intercourse in Port Jervis. He was indicted on a second-degree rape count. White ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery and second-degree rape, with a negotiated 10-year sentence on the robbery count.
On Thursday, Assistant District Attorney Eliza Filipowski asked Judge Craig Brown to impose six years plus 20 years of post-release supervision on the rape count, consecutive to the robbery.
White’s lawyer, Jamie Ferrara, asked Brown to sentence White to something close to the 12 years prosecutors offered at the start of the case. He cited White’s lengthy history of mental health issues, dating back to when he was 8 years old, and a lack of supervision throughout his life; and his client’s propensity to be easily led by others. Ferrara said these things don’t excuse White’s actions, but they explain how he got where he is.
Brown opted to impose White’s sentences consecutively, for an aggregate sentence of 16 years in prison, with five years of post-release supervision on the robbery and 10 years on the rape. Brown also ordered White to pay a total of $1,800 in fines and fees, and $800 in restitution to the robbery victim.
