As a former volunteer nursing home advocate, I am saddened, but not surprised, at recent events in nursing homes. There are many good, dedicated people working in nursing homes. Unfortunately pay is abysmal for what they do.

Understaffing has been a chronic issue, one we advocates complained about. Weekends were worse. Sometimes there were only four aides and one nurse in a wing with 30 people. There were residents who required two aides to change a Depend, what happens if five other residents requiring two aides needed assistance at the same time?

We brought this up at our quarterly meetings but the state does not have minimum staffing guidelines.

My sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones and the staff who care for them, both in nursing homes and our hospitals.
