I ask Mr. Tristram where he gets this unfounded notion that the teachers and other government employees get “Free Pensions.”
Contrary to his misinformed accusation, government employees, including teachers, pay into the pension fund. It is not “Free” as my wife was a school teacher in this county for 31 years and contributed every year to her pension, just the same as those who contribute to their company pension or 401K plan. Health insurance contributions were also deducted.
You need to wind back the clock to 1997 when Governor Whitman (R) borrowed $2.8 billion from the state pension fund to cover the budget deficit due to her reducing the income tax by 30% and didn’t cut expenses enough to compensate. We are still paying off the bonds that were floated in 1997 to cover the money taken from the pension fund and we will continue to pay until 2032.
We robbed Peter to pay Paul, and now we are slowly paying Peter back.
If those that think that government employees have it so great with benefits then quit your job and work for the government. Otherwise enjoy your job and realize that the grass is not always greener on the other side.
